Summer School Fun!

The first week of “Games People Play” was a success. We started the week in Australia learning and playing numerous traditional Aboriginal games. The games covered a wide variety of skills and styles of game play. A few of the games we played included Battendi, Bounce Eye, and Mer Kai. Battendi was set up to enhance both a spear-thrower’s accuracy and distance. We adapted the game by using Scoop & Toss sets and awarded points on both bases. We quickly realized that we would be in trouble if we had to hunt for our own food. Bounce Eye was a version of the game of marbles that originated in Australia in the late 1700s. Rather than being played while kneeling, it is played standing and marbles from dropped at eye level. Mer Kai was a volleyball type game that utilized the kai fruit as the ball.

In the second half of the week, we journeyed to Asia. We discussed the Japanese card game of Menko that was the inspiration to many of the popular card games that include Yu-Gi-Oh! and Pokémon. We looked at Go, a game known for being very strategic despite its simple rules. Many of the students were already familiar with Othello, an American version. We also investigated the game of Tapatan from the Philippines. It is related to Tic-Tac-Toe, but more similar to several other alignment games. One of those is Nine Men’s Morris which emerged from the Roman Empire. The students created their own double sided Tapatan/Nine Men’s Morris game boards.

Students in the Lower Elementary are also following the game theme. More specifically this week, they focused on water games. They were kind enough to let us join them in some of their afternoon water activities which allowed us to teach Lower Elementary a few games at the same time. Over the course of the week, we participated in over thirty games and activities from Australia, Asia, and the United States.

Enrollment Open for Fall 2010

Are you looking for the right environment for your son or daughter, and think Undercroft just may be the place?

UMS is currently accepting student applications for the 2010-2011 school year. To facilitate the process, please download and fill out the student application form. Once complete, submit this form to the UMS office with a $50 application fee, and administration will contact you to set up an interview. Spaces are limited, so we encourage all interested in placement at UMS to begin the process as soon as January.

Students new to Undercroft are welcome to participate in the summer program.

Spring 2010 Soccer Season Kickoff

Fall Season: Saturday, March 27^th – Saturday, May 1^st

Ages 3-8 are eligible to play Undercroft Soccer.

Our Saturday soccer events take place on Saturday mornings from 10-11am on the fields directly north of the Undercroft campus.

The focus of Undercroft Soccer is FUN for all who participate!

We offer kids the opportunity to have a positive sports experience with friends and family.

The cost for the league is $45. This includes the Fall 2009 Soccer t-shirt, individual & team picture, and a trophy. Please make checks payable to: Undercroft Montessori School. Application and checks may be dropped off or mailed to Undercroft Montessori School office (3745 S. Hudson Ave., Tulsa, OK 74135).

Signup Deadline is March 12 – NO LATE REGISTRATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED

Undercroft Montessori School is currently receiving resumes and applications of qualified candidates seeking employment for the 2010-2011 academic year. Preferred candidates will have a related degree in Education. Montessori certification and experience is a plus, but not required for all positions. Candidates selected, however, must be committed to the Montessori approach to education and be willing to receive Montessori training in preparation for the 2010-2011 school year.
