Enrichment-Private Music Lessons (Lower Elementary Ages 7 and up)

Our new upper elementary and middle school music teacher, Matt Hayes, is offering private music lessons to students (lower elementary ages 7 and up) for electric bass, double bass, guitar (both electric and acoustic), piano, drums, and music composition/theory. For information and to get signed up, call Matt Hayes directly at (918) 527-1044 or email at matthew.hayes@undercroft.org. Private lessons offered for the following: Electric Bass: These lessons will center around the approach to playing the electric bass and the techniques that make it unique such as finger style playing, thumb style playing, and slap bass. We will also explore the role of the electric bass in modern musics such as rock, funk, pop, samba, and r&b. Double Bass: These lessons will center around the techniques that make the double bass unique mainly centering on arco playing (playing with the use of a bow) with a bit of pizzicato (playing with the fingers) as well. We will be learning through practice and exploration the role of the double bass in classical music (pre and post Beethoven) and the role of the double basses role in modern and “old timey” jazz musics. Guitar: These lessons will explore the techniques and role of the guitar in modern music and music that pre-dates the instrument. We will be taking greatly from modern pop and rock guitarists and incorporating those abilities into our everyday playing. Piano: These classes will focus on the techniques needed to develop a solid modern pianist that can step into a variety of gigs and perform well. We will be diving into the reading of one or both clefs, basic chords and their inversions, interpreting chord charts, and the development of the ear and the technique “active listening” as taught by Dr. Kenny Werner. Drums: These lessons will focus on how to gain better interdependence of the limbs when playing. This will be a good class for the beginner or anyone looking to clean up their drum playing and get a better feel for the overall rhythm or “pocket” of your beats. Music Composition/Theory: Mainly for the young adult who thinks they may go on to a life of music or onto collegiate musical studies. This class will give you a head start on musical theory and composition on the level that most freshmen in college will experience. We will delve into scales, chords and their constructions, diatonic and non-diatonic chord qualities in music composition, solfège singing, active listening, and alternate time signatures. This class will have homework every lesson. See flyer below for additional details!
